Drip Irrigation

drip irrigationDrip irrigation or trickle irrigation) is probably the most efficient method of watering.  The system works by ‘dripping’ the water directly onto the soil and to the plants root rather than garden hose spraying which tends to create a lot of over-watering.  Chemicals/fertilizers can be applied via the drip as well, again avoiding a lot of wastage.

There are several types of drip irrigation pipe.

  • drip irrigationRain Bird’s patented drip line series, which has an inline emitter, maintains constant pressure, does not deteriorate in condition and does not become clogged up with dirt.
  • Leaky pipe which can lay on the surface of the soil or it can be covered just beneath with a layer of mulch.  The pipe has small adjustable drip heads inserted either randomly along the pipe or positioned beneath plants.  Water drips from the sprinkler head and down to the soil therefore avoiding evaporation.
  • Seep hose, has lots of tiny holes along the length of the pipe.  Water seeps out of the holes at a rate of just a couple of litres per metre per hour.  This type of pipe tends to be buried beneath the coil and there tends to be no water wastage.
